Florida's State Butterfly

Zebra Heliconian (Heliconius charitonius)

The Zebra Heliconian butterfly caterpillars feed on the leaves of several species of passion flowers. The toxin found on the passion flower plants is passed to the caterpillar and made it's way through its butterfl stage, thus protecting the butterfly form predation due to it's unpleasant taste. The butterfly drinks the nectar of a wide range of flowers including lantanas, beggar's ticks, and passion flowers.
